Pickering Airport: Public Opinion Survey

On June 11, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced, at a closed press conference in Claremont ON, that the Pickering Airport, first announced in 1972 and shelved in 1975, will be going ahead after all. Some of the Federal Lands are to go to the new Rouge National Park, some to "industrial / economic development", and the rest -- an area almost twice the size of Pearson -- to an airport.

No consultation, no environmental assessment, no objective studies of need or of Pearson's efficiency or true capacity limits, no concern that this plan would destroy rare, PRIME foodland on the doorstep of Canada's largest city. He called this a "responsible, balanced approach." We call it an irresponsible, uninformed decision.
